A freight broker is an individual or company that arranges the shipment and delivery of goods on behalf of others. Freight brokers match available shipping capacity with freight that needs to be moved and make sure that all parties involved in the shipping process are satisfied with the terms of the agreement. They act as a middleman between the shipper and the carrier and handle all the details of the shipment, including negotiating the best price for the shipment, arranging for the necessary paperwork and tracking the shipment to ensure it is delivered on time.

Anyone can become a freight broker, but most require a license from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The requirements for obtaining a license include passing a background check, completing a basic course in freight brokering, and passing a written exam. In addition, freight brokers may need to obtain a surety bond as proof of financial responsibility.
